From surviving in a goat pen to thriving in a classroom

The smiles on these children’s faces are what keep me returning to Ghana year after year. For more than 20 years, I have traveled to this beautiful country through Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope. Together with our partners and supporters, we have built schools, established a health clinic, trained teachers, provided books for children, and helped education flourish in villages where hope was once in short supply.

These are the children of Gomoa, a small village in Ghana’s Eastern Region. Through a partnership with the Moser Foundation of Virginia, two kindergarten classrooms were built to replace the goat pen where the youngest students once gathered to learn. The Moser Foundation also constructed a kitchen and continues to provide nutritious meals for the children, ensuring they are fed as well as educated.

What inspires me most about Gomoa is its leadership. Rather than accepting poverty as their children’s destiny, the village leaders chose to act. They searched the internet, discovered Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope, and courageously asked for help in building two kindergarten classrooms.

I immediately reached out to the Moser Foundation. Susan Moser and her late husband had lived in Ghana while he served with USAID. After his untimely passing, Susan established the foundation to honor his memory by building schools in the countries they had loved and served. I am deeply grateful that Ghana—and the children of Gomoa—became part of that legacy.

The story didn’t end there. More recently, a generous local benefactor funded the construction of six additional classrooms, an administrative office, and modern washrooms for both teachers and students. Today, the school continues to grow, and it is a privilege for Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope to work alongside such a determined community.

Reaching Gomoa is never easy. Recent rains and ongoing construction left the roads deeply rutted and muddy. Our journey took more than three and a half hours each way over dusty, unpaved roads with no air conditioning. It was hot, bumpy, and exhausting—but the moment we arrived and saw the children’s smiling faces, every mile was worth it.

Those smiles remind me why we continue this work. They are a testament to what is possible when communities, donors, volunteers, and organizations come together to give children the opportunity to learn, dream, and build a brighter future. Your donations are at work everyday to ensure children have the oppotunity to learn with hope for a better future. Donate Here
