Give Me Your Eyes

Jose Carrillo

Often, I get caught up in ministry and missions and in the daily routine of life and miss the larger picture. If you can relate, we can all fall into this season of life, being consumers instead of contributors to the kingdom of God. We forget how privileged we are whether through the tangible or intangibles in life. When we look at our true high priest, Jesus the Son of God, we see the greatest demonstration of love and humility.

As scripture states in Philippians 2:7-8, “but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” We are partakers in His magnificent work, surrendering our lives for His
mission.

In the song “Give Me Your Eyes” by Brandon Heath, I encourage you to read and reflect on the
practical applications we need to keep reminding ourselves of.

“All those people going somewhere, why have I never cared

Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see,
Everything that I keep missing,
Give your love for humanity.
Give me your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach.
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten.

It is not about us, nor any organizational entity. However, what a privilege it is to abide in the Great Commission, to be used by God as laborers in the harvest. The platform that God has given each of us is to increase the name of Jesus, as found in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Debi Frock, the founder of Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope, has provided our Sterling College mission team a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to serve and speak the name of Jesus. Under her leadership, and through Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope, God has placed His divine favor and blessing on the work that is being done here. As a result, children are being educated and taught about the Bible. The eternal impact is countless and will continue to flourish. May the Lord continue to bless Debi Frock.

Our Sterling College team of eleven experienced a once-in-a-lifetime journey. What is being taught at Sterling College does not simply stay contained in the classroom setting. The theological concepts are being practically applied, as we experienced during our time here. These experiences continue nurturing a heart for missional living. Regardless of your area of educational discipline, God can use each of us. As we glance at the biblical example of Peter and John in Acts 4:13, “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.”

Jesus will equip us; the question is, will we trust and obey Him?

The mission of Sterling College, located in Sterling, KS, is “to develop creative and thoughtful leaders who understand a maturing Christian faith.” You may have heard it said about our young adults, “you are the church.” Do we provide opportunities for our young adults to be the church? Do we provide opportunities for missional experiences? It is time that our speech matches our conduct in training and mobilizing our young adults to have a missional perspective. Reminding our young adults, “they can do all things through Christ.” During our time serving with Debi Frock in Ghana, all team members have been blessed and had opportunities for holistic growth. Words cannot merely describe the reality of being on the ground serving here. Traveling to the four village schools, the team went to bless the children and teachers. What we did not realize was that the blessing we received would be far greater.

My encouragement to each of you is to continue supporting the work of the Lord being accomplished by Debi Frock, the founder of Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope. May Sterling College and Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope, develop a relationship of longevity and continuity to further the work of the Great Commission.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

I love how well you appreciate the experience for your students. Debi and I have been prayer partners for nearly 40 years and I have been to see her work in Ghana on just 2 trips, but have been praying for the work always. I know that what you were able to experience comes as a result of Ghanian Mothers’ Hope pouring into that place for more than 3 decades. I do hope this can be a regular experience for your students because I can see that you all made great contributions too. Together everyone is making the name of Jesus famous!
