It’s Hard to Say Goodbye

by Faith Holtz – Day 5

Today was our last day at Akramaman. As a group we visited this village not fully understanding the hold they would have on us. Although we only spent 4 days at the Kg school painting and getting to know the children, they now hold a permanent spot in my heart.

Being there reminded me of my favorite verse, 1 Corinthians 12:4-8, “Love is patient, Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast…” Those that I have met over the past week have shown me what it is to have a heart full of this kind of love. They are the definition of 1 Corinthians 12:4-8.

Those of all ages in the village showed genuine love and joy the minute we got there. There was no tension and never a question of if we were welcomed. I have learned so much from this group of people in a short 4 days.

There is an indescribable feeling when you get to Ghana and get to witness the gratefulness and faith there is. While we would paint, all the children wanted to do was help us out or follow you around. They would collapse in your arms and laugh the most contagious laughter.

Being around this environment gives you a whole new perspective on life. It shows you how easy it is to be grateful, kind, respectful, and how much God provides for us in every situation. Although they do not have as much as the states, God has given them what they needed and provided them with a happiness throughout their lives that those with everything do not necessarily have.

Although today was a hard goodbye, I was grateful for the opportunity God had provided me on this trip to meet the wonderful faithful people and open my eyes to new cultures.

Whether it was to see how they worship through dance, how quick they were to help out those around them, or how the littlest act of kindness could go the longest way, I am beyond blessed to have this opportunity.

Even just painting two classrooms and some chairs made the biggest difference to these kids and teachers. The way their faces light up when they are able to help or when you walk in a room and give them a little wave is something you will never ever forget.
